This week in Maths, we have been investigating area and perimeter. This is the task we were assigned:
“Granny bought a new rug for her hallwaythat measures 1m x 1m. Unfortunately, she gets it home and finds it is too wide for her hallway!”
Using newspaper, make Granny’s rug and calculate the area and perimeter of the rug.
Resize Granny’s rug so it has the same area but will fit into her hallway (it has to be less than 1 metre wide!)
Calculate the area and perimeter of her new rug. What do you notice?
Record sketches and measurements of your rugs and write some statements about what you have discovered about area and perimeter.
Scroll down to read our comments and view our newly designed rugs.
To start with the carpet/rug was 1mx1m making it 1m2. When the square did not fit we realised it had to be less than 1m wide. After putting the rug back together we had to find the area and we knew that if we started with the area of 1m2 and we used all the rug it must of ended with 1m2 in a different form. I say this because it started as a square and now it is a rocket shape!

With our 1m2 carpet/rug, we firstly cut it straight down the middle. Then we ended up with 2 rectangles and the 2 rectangles measured 50cm by 1m. With one of the 50 by 1 rectangles, we cut it diagonally down the middle to form 2 scalene triangles. Then we stuck the base of the triangles to the 2 bottom edges of the other 50cm by 1m triangle. The area of the rug is still 1m2, but the perimeter has changed. With the original 1m2 rug, the perimeter was 4m because all the edges were 1m, but with our new rug, the perimeter is now 4.24m. The perimeter is an extra .24m because it comes from the triangle’s diagonal edge. If you cut something diagonally, it gives the entire shape (rug) more perimeter. There are 2 ways to find out the area:
1) the rectangle’s area is 50cm, and the 2 triangles put together is 5ocm, so 50cm+50cm=1m
2) divide the rug into shapes that you can find the area with. To find out the are of the triangles, I did 1/2(LxW) and then added up all the composite shape areas together.

The students were challenged to write a one hundred word response to the picture prompt below. Read on to enjoy some very entertaining responses. In Term 4, we will continue to engage in writing tasks using the prompts found at 100WC a global creative writing website.
The Hammock Escape – Juliet
I look around, no-one is watching me. Carefully, I crawl through the dark shadows, rustling the leaves as I move my silky body. The white hammock sways softly in the night breeze, calling me to lie down. I finally obey it’s call and I lie on the tasseled, ropey fabric. My glowing eyes pierce the darkness as I stare at the house in front of me. I hear movement inside the house, the curtains part. Bright light pours out of the window. My eyes take a minute to adjust. Someone is there. I set myself on the ground and RUN!
Scaring a Bear Away – Hamish
It was a sunny morning and I got up and had a jolt of surprise, while making my scrumptious tea. I saw a bear on my hammock! I called a liaison for the people in my neighbourhood to talk about why there is an obesus arctos in my hammock! Everyone decided to get a harley motorbike to rev and scare the bear away. A horrible chill went down my spine at the thought of scaring a bear.
We all went outside and bought harley motorbike. We started to rev the motorbike and the bear went away to it’s habitat safely.
Bear in My Hammock – Damien
Saturday night, thought it would have been a normal night right. Well nup, I was of my way to get a glass of warm milk in the cold winter night. I got the milk, and I was turning away to my bedroom, I saw it the terrifying, nightmarish image of a black bear, sleeping in my hammock.
I look out the to see a most extraordinary sight. A plump black bear, was before strolling around, now lounging on my old white hammock!
He turns around, looking at me in a most questioning manner. Then he opens his mouth. Casually asks for a warm cup of coffee, specifically milk and eight sugar cubes.
I make his order. Walk out to give him the coffee.
He says “I was sent to pass on a message, but before I do. Are you Fred Sparks representing the “A Bear’s Dream Association.”
The what Association?
I had no idea what to say.
Encounter Of The Bear – Ruby
While I was frantically running around outside in the magnificent fresh summer air, I saw a bear. It made my hair stand on end and sent a chill down my spine.I was not resilient, I ran rapidly towards the hammock frightened on the inside but strong on the outside. The bear lay there, eyes as sharp as a hawks staring straight at me. I couldn’t bear it much longer, I dreaded going any closer but I had too, so I could run inside as fast as I possibly could. There was nothing to do but run. Ready set go!!!
Jack
The white door started opening, the more it opened the brighter it got. Behind the door was charcoal black bear crawling into my new hammock. Creeping towards the bear I grabbed a long, sharp knife preparing to cut the hammock’s ropes. I raised the knife in the thin air, realising he was drinking a thick liquid. I held the knife down, going against my instincts I decided to let him go. Silently, I walked away while looking away into the bear’s gleaming, dangerous eyes. Inside my house I locked the doors and the windows just in case he storms in.
